What Is It Really That You Want From Running?

Can you still remember your reason why you ran the first time? Were you like me who arrogantly said that "I'll never run a marathon! That's Crazy!"? Yes, that's what I thought 3 years ago. Back then, I can’t seem to grasp the reason why would I punish myself and run 42.195 kilometers. But now it’s a totally different story.

"Why do you run?" - We are often asked this question. But our answer varies and most of the time changes over time. Here are some of my crazy reasons. Some are true if I may add. :D

Me and My Crazy Alter Ego

Alter Ego : What is it really that you want from running?
Me : I want to live a healthy lifestyle.
Alter Ego : Ah ok... So, why do you run?
Me :  TOINKS!

Alter Ego : What is it really that you want from running?
Me :  I want to lose weight.
Alter Ego : Now that you are thin, you should start thinking about your dry skin.

Alter Ego : What is it really that you want from running?
Me :  I want to finish a race.
Alter Ego : Finish? I thought you want to win the race?

Alter Ego : What is it really that you want from running?
Me :   Do a sub 30 minute 5K, sub 60 10K, sub 2-hour HM, etc.
Alter Ego : What’s with the "sub"?

Alter Ego : What is it really that you want from running?
Me :    I want to collect finisher’s medals.
Alter Ego : They have medals for losers too?

Alter Ego : What is it really that you want from running?
Me :   I run for the loot bags
Alter Ego : That’s stupid! You could buy those silly things with half the cost of your registration fees.

Alter Ego : What is it really that you want from running?
Me :  I want to be a marathoner.
Alter Ego : Huh? I thought you ran a 5K marathon last week?

Alter Ego : What is it really that you want from running?
Me :   I run to blog. Boom!
Alter Ego : Quit running... You don’t write that well. Kaboom!

ME : KAASAR!
Alter Ego :   Get a life!

How about you? How does your reason for running evolved over time? How do you think others (non-runners) would react to your reasons?

  2. During the first time I joined a running event, my only reason was to get that 1.25 midterms grade in our PE subject.

Then the runner's high of that very first event nullified the very reason why I started running. Then I just ran and ran without reason, I just want to run because it's fun.

And when I gained speed and strength, reasons started coming in again -- to become faster than: 1) that old man with his askal dog who always bags the top places; 2) than those PMAers; 3) than those seasoned Baguio runners (heck!).

There are more other reasons I couldn't enumerate them all. But I want to gain back that time when I only run without reason. Just for the sake of running! I think that's what old, err... maturing age gives us, to have a reason for everything, hehe!
